Leadership Team

Christ Community Church is led not by a single pastor or leader, but by a group of elders (Greek “presbyteros” for shepherd) who depend upon and represent Christ the Chief Shepherd (John 10).  The Session of Elders is comprised of pastors (Teaching Elders) and laymen (Ruling Elders) who are elected by the congregation to shepherd the flock of God – to know, feed, lead and protect – bringing a localized vision of the church according to Scripture.  [Ref: 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, 1 Peter 5, Acts 15]

Should you have need to reach our Elders for confidential care or counsel, please email elders.christcommunity.jc@gmail.com.

Ruling Elders:

AJ Babel, Hal Bohlman, Dustin Clark, Ken Farmer, Paul Gorman

Christ Community Church is also served by Deacons (Greek “diakonos” for servant) who are called to develop and manage a culture of mercy as the church serves the needs of people/families within the congregation, as well as the community around us.  Consistent with the New Testament church, the Deacons at CCC work to develop the grace of stewardship and mercy among the congregation, thus enabling the elders to prioritize the shepherding ministry of Word and prayer. [Ref: Acts 6, 1 Timothy 3]

Should you have need to reach our Deacons regarding a personal/family need, our church facility, or as relates a mercy opportunity in the community, please email deacons.christcommunity.jc@gmail.com.

CCC staff serve under the direction of the Session of Elders, supporting the worship and mission of the church.  Importantly, at present all staff serve within an intentional model of bi-vocational community engagement (employed outside of the church), which necessitates flexibility yet enhances our mission to seek “the reformation of the church, community and world.”  Most importantly, for each of these folks, family health and church relationships remain the priority.

Pastor/Teaching Elder:  Jim Powell

Jim Powell began serving as pastor of Christ Community Church in January 2017, returning to East Tennessee where he met his wife at Carson Newman College.  Prior to coming to Christ Community, Jim pastored Harmony PCA in Kingsport (2003-2006), planted West Valley PCA in Emmaus PA (2006-2013), and at Blythewood PCA in South Carolina (2013-16) while serving as Executive Director of Home Works of America (2013-2018).  Jim remains intentionally bi-vocational, helping lead Appalachia Service Project as a Senior Development Officer.  Jim received his BA in History and Political Science from Carson-Newman, after which he completed an MDiv at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois.  In addition to his regular role at CCC and ASP, Jim serves as an occasional instructor for the Charles Simeon Trust, helping lead Workshops on Biblical Exposition domestically and internationally.  Jim is blessed to be husband to Kori and father to Lina, Meggie, Nate, Oria, Pete and Quade… and finds peace in running from the noise on the streets and trails of Johnson City.

Assistant Pastor of Shepherding:  Bill Leuzinger

Bill Leuzinger serves Christ Community as our Assistant Pastor of Shepherding, emphasizing pastoral counseling and discipleship. He has served in full and part time pastoral ministry for 34 years. Later this year, he and his precious wife Sharon will celebrate 35 years of marriage, for which they gladly acknowledge God’s kindness and grace! They are thankful parents of 5 children, all married, and grandparents of six boys (so far!). In addition to ministry here, Bill currently works part time for a company specializing in commercial property maintenance.

Minister of Discipleship:  AJ Babel

AJ Babel, a native of Johnson City, serves Christ Community as our Minister of Discipleship, with focus on organizing our Community Groups and Discipleship ministry. Outside of his church leadership, AJ serves as Team Leader with Cru locally (ETSU and regional campuses) and is pursuing an MDiv through Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida. AJ is joyfully married to Krista and father of three young girls – Elsie, Lydia, and Annabelle.

Music Director:  Clinton Ross

Clinton Ross, a North Carolina native, serves Christ Community as our Music Director and chief musician.  Clinton moved to East Tennessee is 2010. He received a degree in bluegrass, old time and country music from ETSU in 2014. His latest album, For all Seasons, a collection of hymns, was released in 2018. He has served as music director of CCC since 2016 and every week aims to adorn the gospel of Jesus Christ with beauty. He has been married to his wife Beth for 2 years and they live in Elizabethton with their 2 dogs, Molly and Spike.

Church Assistant:  Shannon Thomsen

Shannon Thomsen has served Christ Community as our Church Assistant since 2014.  She received an undergraduate degree at UT in Knoxville and is a native of Johnson City.  After meeting her husband, Colm, in Ireland and living there for 5 years, they moved their family back to East Tennessee.  The Thomsens now have 4 elementary aged children and enjoy reading, caffeinating, and spending time with friends and neighbors.
